What Is Microneedling and Does It Work?

Microneedling has been trending for years at this point, and it’s one of the most common questions I get: “What is Microneedling and is it actually worth it? or is it overhyped?”

The short answer is that yes, it works… but results depend a lot on the device, the technique, and what you’re actually trying to treat. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures trigger your body’s natural wound-healing response, which stimulates collagen and elastin production. The result over time is firmer, smoother, more even-toned skin.

What Does Microneedling Actually Treat?

This is where people get confused, because microneedling is marketed as a solution for almost everything. But it works better for some things more than others. So what are the benefits of microneedling?

Here’s a realistic breakdown:

It works well for:

  • Fine lines and early textural changes
  • Acne scars (especially shallow, rolling scars)
  • Enlarged pores
  • Mild Skin laxity
  • Uneven skin tone and surface pigmentation
  • Overall skin quality and “glow”

It’s less effective for:

  • Deep, ice-pick acne scars (CO2 laser tends to be more effective here)
  • Significant photodamage or brown spots
  • Active acne breakouts
  • Skin that needs resurfacing, not just stimulation

How Does Microneedling Feel?

Most patients describe microneedling as very tolerable, especially with topical numbing applied beforehand (which we always do). There’s a mild pressure sensation and sometimes some warmth. Some areas are more sensitive than others such as the forehead, but overall, it’s one of the most easily tolerated treatments in most medspas.

The most common reaction I hear is: “That wasn’t as bad as I thought.”

Immediately after, your skin will be red, like a moderate sunburn. That usually fades within 24–48 hours for most patients. Sometimes, very mild flaking or dryness can follow over the next few days as the skin turns over. That’s normal and part of the process.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Do You Need?

This is the part most people underestimate. One session of microneedling will give you some improvement, but the real results come from a series. Most patients need 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart to see meaningful improvement—especially for texture and acne scars.

Think of it like working out. One session improves things. Consistent sessions change things. After your initial series, maintenance treatments every 3–6 months help sustain results.

Note: When treating things like acne scarring, 5-7 treatments are often needed initially.

Which Is Better? Microneedling or Laser?

This comes up constantly. Here’s the honest answer: they do different things. Microneedling stimulates collagen through mechanical injury. CO2 laser (like CoolPeel) does that AND resurfaces the skin—meaning it physically removes damaged tissue and triggers a more powerful healing response.

Microneedling is a great option if you want:

  • A good general refresh
  • A regular maintenance treatment
  • A more gradual improvement
  • A treatment that’s more accessible for a wider range of skin types

So, Does Microneedling Work?

Yes! Studies show that a series of microneedling treatments can increase collagen and elastin production by up to 400% at 6 months post treatment series.

But it’s not a one-and-done treatment, and it’s not the right tool for everything. When it’s used appropriately, with a proper series, it genuinely improves skin quality in ways that are visible and lasting. If you’ve been curious about it, the best way to find out if it’s right for you is a consultation.
