When Should I Start Botox Treatments?

Prevention? Correction? Where to start??

The age old question… “When should I start Botox treatments?”

This is one of the questions I get asked most often in my practice. Unfortunately, there’s really no cut and dry answer aside from “Whenever you’re ready to start.” There’s no magic age for when to start. It’s not 25, it’s not 30, it’s not 35. There are a lot of factors that play into the decision.

A lot of it really depends on your natural anatomy and where your skin is at in the natural aging process. Generally, the sign that you want to look out for when you’re considering starting Botox is the appearance of static lines as opposed to dynamic lines.

“Dynamic lines”

Lines caused by muscle movement that only appear when contracting that muscle (i.e. when you raise your eyebrows, the lines appear on your forehead, then go away when you relax)

“Static lines”

Lines caused by repetitive muscle movement that do not go away when your face is at rest (i.e. the forehead lines that form when you raise your eyebrows are still present at rest)

Realistically, most people have enough collagen and elasticity in their tissue to naturally prevent static lines until their mid-20s. I have, however, seen some people in their early 20s who have set in, static lines already. That’s the point at which you want to consider starting Botox because those lines aren’t going to go away on their own.

Recently, the trend of “Preventative Botox” “Baby Botox” has become incredibly popular because it helps prevent these static lines from forming, but I still don’t recommend doing this until at least your mid-20s unless:

A) You already have set in lines

B) You have a genetic predisposition for them (i.e. your parents got deep, set in lines early on)

C) You have strong muscles that we can tell will set in quickly
