If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t want to look frozen,” you’re not alone. I hear it almost DAILY from new patients.
Searches like “bad Botox,” “Botox gone wrong,” and “why does Botox look fake” are incredibly common—especially in places like West Hollywood where you see a wide range of results.
The truth is, Botox itself isn’t the problem.
When it looks unnatural, it usually comes down to how it’s used.
What Botox Is Actually Supposed to Do
Botox (and Dysport) are neuromodulators designed to:
- Soften dynamic wrinkles
- Reduce excessive muscle movement
- Create a more rested appearance
When done correctly, people shouldn’t be able to tell you had anything done. They’ll just think you look less tired or angry, more relaxed, and more refreshed.
Why Botox Sometimes Looks Fake
1. Overdosing the Muscle
This is the biggest cause.
Too much product → too much muscle suppression → no movement at all.
That’s when you get foreheads that are frozen solid, overly arched eyebrows, and that stiff, emotionless look people associate with Botox.
2. Trying to Treat Every Line Instead of the Face as a Whole
Not every line needs to be erased. There, I said, it.
When Botox is used too aggressively, natural expression disappears and facial balance is thrown off.
A better approach is to treat the face globally, thinking about how all the parts move together as one to give you the expression that makes you unique.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s preserving expression while softening intensity.
3. Poor Injection Placement
Botox is extremely technique-dependent.
Even small differences in placement can lead to heavy brows, uneven movement an unnatural shaping.
This is where experience matters more than anything.
4. Lack of a Long-Term Plan
A lot of patients are treated reactively:
“Fix this line”
“Add more here”
Over time, this leads to results that feel disconnected or overdone.
By starting conservatively, adjusting gradually, and thinking about how the face changes over time, this keeps your result looking natural.
How to Avoid Fake-Looking Botox
Start Conservative
It’s always easier to add more at your two week follow-up than it is to have to wait 3-4mo because you went overboard the first time
This is especially important if you’re new to Botox and it’s something I explain to every patient whether they’re new or just new to me.
Choose the Right Provider
When looking for the right provider, these are somethings that can make the difference in “Wow, you look great!” and “Wow, you look different”:
- time spent evaluating your face
- time spent talking to you about your life and your goals
- attention to detail
- willingness to say “no” when needed
Focus on Movement, Not Just Lines
The best results come from adjusting how the face moves—not eliminating movement entirely.
That’s what keeps things looking natural.
Build a Plan Over Time
The most natural tox results come from:
- consistency
- small adjustments
- communication with your provider
Remember, even the best injectors can’t get it perfectly right every single time (although we try). It takes time to learn how someone’s face responds to the treatment and learn what you like and don’t like. Communicating with your provider is the best way to dial it in and figure out what works best for you.
Botox in West Hollywood: Why Results Vary So Much
In a market like West Hollywood, you’ll find providers who’ve been injecting tox for 10 days, 10+years, and everything in between. This area is known for aesthetics—but also for extremes.
A lot of people are either over-treated or afraid to have anything done at all because all they’ve ever noticed is over-treatment. But in reality, there are probably a ton of people you know who get tox treatments and you have no idea.
That middle ground, the natural and balanced look, is where good work lives.
That’s the kind of work we specialize in at Beauty FX.
